Camp War Eagle 101

Hello new parents and students – welcome to the Auburn Family! We are so glad that your child has chosen to attend the loveliest village on the plains for college, and we are even happier that you chose to visit Auburn with them! Camp War Eagle is exciting and informative, but it can be a little overwhelming. Here’s some helpful hints and tricks for getting through these two days from our intern and current Auburn University student, Rachel!

1. Know that it’s going to be very, very busy (but awesome!)
The best part about CWE is that the excellent staff and counselors give you all of the information that you could ever need about academics, campus life, residence halls, financial services and more. It’s a busy two days, but it will be informative and helpful and fun!

2. Don’t be afraid to ask questions.
The whole point of CWE is to become familiar with Auburn. If you have a question about anything, even if you think it’s too specific, ask anyway! Someone will know the answer.  When I went to Camp War Eagle, I had a really weird, specific question about registering for classes in the Honors College. Even though my counselor didn’t know the answer, it only took him two seconds to find someone who did. The CWE counselors are trained specifically to help you, so utilize them. You can always call the Foy Information Desk (remember that from your campus tour?) if you need to. The number is 334-844-4244.

3. Attend the business fair!
I know, at the end of Camp War Eagle you might be completely exhausted and want to head home (or back to your hotel bed!) But you should consider attending the business fair.  The business fair has representatives from companies and organizations from all other the community. There’s lots of freebies, including free food and giveaways. If you visit our table, you can enter to win a semester of free textbooks! We also have information about booking hotels during football season, so stop by!
Additionally, if your student wants to live off campus, many of the apartment complexes have representatives at the fair too. Come visit, enter to win free books and take a look around (and grab some free stuff!)

4. Be prepared to console if your student didn’t get the “perfect schedule.”
One of the most common things I hear about Camp War Eagle is, “I didn’t get the classes I wanted.” Those of us at the Tourism Bureau that went to Auburn remember going to Camp War Eagle and not getting any of the classes we had planned for! Don’t worry – it will not ruin the rest of your college career. You have plenty of time to take the classes you need and registration is SO MUCH EASIER after Camp War Eagle. You are not doomed to 8 a.m. classes forever, I promise.

5. Bring the right stuff with you.
Besides sheets and shampoo, your student also needs to bring his or her completed form for the Medical Clinic! If you don't have it, no worries - you'll just have to send it in once you leave Camp War Eagle. It’ll also make your student's life easier if they’ve taken the Math Placement test – that way they can sign up for the right math class if they need to! If necessary, have them take the Foreign Language Placement Test too. Aigle de guerre! (That's War Eagle in French.)

6. Explore!
Auburn University is great (and, of course, the reason you’re here) but the community has a lot to offer too. Instead of rushing out of town after Camp War Eagle is over, consider staying an extra night and trying out one of our fabulous restaurants (see our Best Bites list here), or checking out the boutiques downtown. Once football season starts, Auburn gets busy! Take this opportunity to enjoy the peace and calm that Auburn prides itself on...on every day except gameday!

7. Practice your “War Eagle!”
If you’re not an Auburn alum, chances are you aren’t used to saying “War Eagle!” yet. That’s ok, because you’re going to get plenty of practice during Camp War Eagle. Don’t be shy about it! You and your student are now a part of the Auburn Family. Just because you aren’t the one attending Auburn doesn’t mean you’re off the hook – whenever my parents wear their Auburn gear (in Colorado!), at least one person will say “War Eagle!”

We are looking forward to having you here! Have fun and don’t hesitate to contact us or the CWE office if you have any questions!

Skip into Spring

It’s finally here – the beautiful twilight of weather between January and June that brings us cool breezes and warm temperatures.
It won’t be long before the sweltering summer sets in, so here’s a few ways you can enjoy the sweet sunshine of spring in scenic Auburn-Opelika.

1.Hit the links
The Grand National grounds are nothing short of gorgeous, especially on a crisp spring day. Take an afternoon and enjoy one of the three courses Grand National has to offer. Afterward, have a relaxing lunch on the porch as you gaze over the grounds and lake.

 2.Picnic in the park
Just because Valentine’s Day is past doesn’t mean you can’t have a romantic date. Pack a picnic lunch and a blanket and grab your sweetheart - the soft rolling hills of Kiesel Park underneath the trees are perfect for this sweet surprise. You can also take your date to Town Creek Park and enjoy your lunch by the pond. Either way, you’ll both soak up the sunshine during a luxurious afternoon.

 3.Hike & Bike in Chewacla
Chewacla State Park is a perfect getaway for outdoor activities. Now that the weather is warmer, take the Mountain Laurel Trail to Chewacla Falls and dip your toes in! If you’re the adventurous type, grab your mountain bike and tackle the trails the Central Alabama Pedalers have been working on.

4.Take a downtown stroll
Enjoying the outdoors doesn’t always mean you have to be out in nature’s thickets. Take a scenic stroll through Auburn or Opelika’s scenic and historic downtown to put some spring in your step. Enjoy a Toomer’s lemonade (or ice cream!) at the end of your jaunt in downtown Auburn on Samford’s lawn, or stop in for a pop from the Overall Co. in downtown Opelika and enjoy it on their rooftop patio!

How do you celebrate spring in Auburn-Opelika? Let us know in the comments!

Why I love Auburn & Opelika

No sugar coating... no fluff. I really and truly love this place. As a native of Chicago, (yes, I am forever stuck with a Midwestern accent) I have learned to appreciate all of the amazing things that the South and this area have to offer. So, here is a list of the things I love.

-Summertime. When the mass amount of students (I was one of them just a year ago) clear out, the drive to work is cut in half and the weather is H-O-T.

-Drinks and 'small plates' at Piccolo.

-Eating. I love food. Our 'Top 10 Eats' restaurants are simply the best. My favorite cheap eats would be Toomer's Drug while I prefer to be wined and dined at Cafe 123 downtown Opelika.

-Azaleas... especially the ones in front of Samford Hall.

-My co-workers. Nope, no one paid me to say that. They simply are the best. Everyone who knows them reminds me frequently 'how lucky I am,' and I agree!

-The farmers market at Ag Heritage Park and at the Courthouse Square in Opelika. Support your local farmers AND get delicious food? Count me in!

-Free parking downtown at certain times of year... because it gives me an excuse to go shop!

-Kiesel Park, dog park heaven for my sweet dog Lady.

-Free events.  SummerNight Downtown Art Walk in Auburn, Noon Tunes in Opelika, Summer Swing in Opelika and the list goes on...

My favorite mascot
-Aubie. Hands down the coolest mascot. I don't care if you are 4 years old or 80 years old... you know you smile when you see him.

AO Tourisms 'Favorite Fans'

 Stephanie Hudman

Stephanie Hudman of Ooltewah, Tenn., won the Auburn-Opelika Tourism Bureau's Baseball Weekend Getaway Package. Stephanie and her friends (pictured left) came to Auburn after winning 4 tickets to the Auburn v. Alabama Baseball Game, a gift card to Toomer's Drug, an AU Prize Pack and overnight accommodations in the area! Stephanie and her friends went to Toomer's where they enjoyed lunch, lemonade and limeade! Congrats Stephanie and thanks for visiting!

 The Porter Family

Carter Porter, pictured left, and Marshall Porter, below, are Aubie's biggest fans! After several attempts to get a photo with the lovable mascot over the years, they were finally able to catch him at the Auburn v Arkansas Baseball game in March.

The Porter's won baseball tickets through the Tourism Bureau. The boys parents, Steve and Cindy Porter, are both 1999 graduates of Auburn University. The boys grandparents, Karen and Bill Porter, who live in Auburn, showed Carter and Marshall a great time on their Spring Break visit to the area. The boys attended the baseball game, painted at Sips and Strokes, attended the St. Patrick's Day celebration in Opelika at the Irish Bred Pub, shopped at Old Navy, ate at Johnny Brusco's, Mellow Mushroom, Louie's, and had ice cream at Bruster's and Marble Slab Creamery...never a dull moment!

The Urbanowski Family

Tom Urbanowski, left, is a 1994 Chemical Engineering Graduate of Auburn University. His wife, Vicki, and two children Alyssa and Will reside in Kingwood, Texas. This 'favorite fans' family drove to Auburn from Texas to watch the 2011 BCS National Championship so they could "watch the game in the best environment outside Arizona."
